My Brute on iPhone -3

my_brute_5

Gameplay

There are a few different parts to this game. The first is creating a Brute. This is fun because there are a lot of different choices on what to make your Brute look like. The developers shied away from your typical looking person and went for the more anime-looking characters which I really like. You start out with the option to make three Brutes, but you can unlock up to eight throughout your gameplay.

my_brute_5

Once you have your Brute created, you are ready to fight. You are asked if you have a master. If you know someone else who plays My Brute, you can ask them for their Master code, and you will unlock special powers for your Brute. Because none of my friends play My Brute, I was able to search online for a master code and unlock some powers. If you don’t have a master code, don’t fret, you can continue to play the game. I played the first few days without a master and then got one so that I could continue growing in strength. You also want to choose what type of fighter/dojo you want. Each type has a different advantage, so choose wisely as it will affect your skills.

my_brute_5

Now you are ready for battle. Choose from 3 different opponents that pop up from the server, sometimes close to your skill level, other times, not so much. But even the skill level doesn’t show everything since you cannot see if they have special weapons or a helper, which can bring down health significantly. In all reality, it’s a crap shoot until you get into the arena and start the fight. But once the fight starts, there is nothing you can do. Watch as you battle it out with your opponent and hope that your Brute comes out victorious!!

my_brute_5

These are just the basics of the game. There are a lot of unlockable items as you play which can help enhance game play and help your Brute win more battles. The more you play, the more you discover for your Brute!

Controls

There is very little in the way of controls in this game since you aren’t actually fighting. Everything is touch based and very simple to navigate through. No guessing here; just touch and go. Simple iPhone style.

my_brute_5

Suggestions

I think the big miss on this game was an instructional guide. I have never played a dojo styled game before, so I was a bit confused on how to obtain a master or get upgrades and more strength/power for my Brute. I also think that for this genre, $4.99 is a bit on the high side. I think it would be more reasonbly priced at $2.99 since there is little “game play” to it. Other than that, this game is very well layed out and simple to pick up and play. It has continuous replay value as you can always battle another player out there.

Conclusion

As seen throughout my review, this game is simple, yet enjoyable. For me it is great eye candy with the anime looking Brutes and animation. I really enjoyed it and will continue growing my Brute to be a lean, mean, fighting machine. If you’re having questions as to whether this genre is for you, try out Brute lite. It will give you a flavor of the game and help you figure out if you’re willing to pay the current $4.99 price.

Pay for My Brute on iPhone or not?

At the moment there is two versions of my brute. One on the internet open to all players and it is free... and another on iphone, different from the web version and includes more features.
It is written on Bulkypix site that "Players start from scratch (the game is not connected to the online version) and try to become the strongest Brute in the world." So, it is understood that they use /used the web game as a big advertisement for themselves and it seems that they left it to death...

This is taken from alexa:

Mybrute.com is still a top 500 site but it is dropping down. As no new features are included on the web based game people become bored of it. Finding pupils is not as easy as before, when you lvl up it is more hard to gain more experience points so even you fight everyday it takes months to reach to the next level. So it need some urgent touches to the game. But bulkyfix invests on iPhone version;

On iPhone My Brute allows you to:
  • - Create and personalise up to 8 brutes.
  • - Invite other players to become your pupils.
  • - Open your own dojo and find yourself a master worthy of this title.
  • - Fight up to 5 opponents a day.
  • - Discover and master more than 70 skills and weapons.
  • - Unlock up to 8 battle arenas
  • - Have discussions with other players from around the world via Open Feint
  • - Challenge your friends on Facebook Connect
  • - New chat rooms

The Bulkypix and Motion Twin team has been working for several months to adapt MyBrute to the iPhone and iPod Touch, to create a new competition and offer regular and exclusive content for this version.

After releasing My Brute on 2009-06-05 for iPhone and iTouch, they released My Brute Lite on 2009-06-25. My Brute Lite includes those features:

My Brute Lite is easy to access and allows you to:

  • - Open your own dojo.
  • - Fight up to 3 opponents a day.
  • - Discover and master more than 70 skills and weapons.
  • - Have discussions with other players from around the world via Open Feint
  • - Challenge your friends on Facebook Connect
As a result Bulkypix represents you 3 choises now:
You can play 5 fights with more features by paying 3.99€ or 4.99$;
You can play 3 fights with more features free;
You can play 3 fights with old features.

The choise is yours but it seems the web game seems to be dying... However, to gain pupils in iPhone you need to wait other people to pay for it also. Even in free version My Brute Lite you need to pay for 3.0 operating system.

My Brute sees 260,000 fights in three days on iPhone

by Spanner Spencer

Last Friday, French developer Bulkypix released the iPhone adaptation of the web game phenomenon, My Brute. The web game lands itself 1.7 million hits per day (literally and statistically) and it seems many of those players also own an iPhone or iPod touch.

Apparently My Brute on the iPhone has seen a whopping 260,000 fights, prompting Bulkypix to launch an online ranking system to determine whose kung fu is best.

"We are really excited to see that My Brute is a huge success with more than 260 000 fights done past 3 days," explains Bulkypix CEO Vincent Dondaine. "Reviews on different App Stores are looking great. For example, in France we have more than 600 ratings with an average of 5 stars."

My Brute allows you to create your own dojo customise your fighters (iPhone-ka?) and then pit them against other players in an RPG-style combat arena. The more students your dojo gains, the more goodies and techniques your fighters learn.

The ranking system shows both the top 25 individual Brutes, and the 25 hottest performing dojos across the world. The next My Brute update will make the leaderboards available within the game, so you can watch your chi rise as you fight.

"It's amazing to see how fast people have started to talk about the game across the internet, as they try to find new pupils," says Dondaine. "The community has started to thrive on the iPhone, and we'll be bringing regular new content to make everyone happy."

IPHONE GAME REVIEW

by Spanner Spencer

I've been practising kung fu for about 25 years, studying a variety of disciplines, swinging a host of different weapons, and taking more punches than I care to count. Out of all the different styles I've studied and lessons I've learned, the truth I've come to realise about martial arts is that they're essentially very simple: you just have to practice them diligently for a very long time.

Master Liang He Qing summarised kung fu in one quick and accurate phrase: "There are no secrets. Practice, practice, practice."

My Brute fits Master Liang's doctrine perfectly. At first glance this rather unusual fighting game boasting role-playing elements seems shallow and uninvolved. 1.7 million players having already toyed with a free web version, however, suggests hidden depth to this unique title.

Your quest for martial prowess begins with the creation of your own personalised character. You can tweak variables like gender, clothing, hairstyle, accessories and a bunch of other aesthetic elements to ensure that no two brutes look the same.

More important than looks is the style of pseudo-kung fu in which you choose to enroll. There are three different styles to choose from, which form the basis of the fighting moves your character learns in their martial career.

The role-playing aspects are a little more prevalent than the fighting, which is an automated system based on the abilities and experience of your character - not unlike the automatic turn-based combat scene in classical Japanese role-playing games. Your task, therefore, is to guide your Brute's growth through careful training and, as Master Liang says, practice, practice, practice.

Each day your character can take part in up to five different bouts, fought asynchronously against other people's Brutes from around the world that are of a similar experience level. You'll win some and lose plenty, but lessons and experience and gained from both. You pick up new special moves, weapons, and even animal sidekicks to enhance your kung fu style through daily training.

Your experience and prowess are also enhanced as other My Brute players join your dojo and you become a student of other people's disciplines. Doing so unlocks new arenas, weapons, characters, and a host of other goodies depending on the skills of the dojo's sensei.

This social aspect of My Brute is very similar to the range of online mafia games that are so popular on the iPhone, only with a much richer, and perhaps a little more seamless, graphical interface.

There's no denying that it takes a little while for My Brute's colours to shine through, but once they do you'll be checking in on your dojo as regularly as you check your email. It's a quick game - jump in, throw a flurry of kicks and punches, then jump back out - it demands that you practise regularly (meaning every day, ideally) to master your martial craft.

Each character might be restricted to just five fights per day, which doesn't take long to get through, but you are at least able to create up to eight different fighters in your dojo, and their individual evolutions will be quite unique since it's very much based on the opponents they face.

It's also worth pointing out to fans of the online web-based game that French developer Bulkypix has put together a superb, pixel-perfect adaptation for the iPhone. Obviously the online multiplayer aspects are fully retained, though it's a completely separate system to the web game, with no interaction between them.

My Brute begins life on your iPhone as a very basic, uninspiring showcase of cartoon combat, growing through diligent practice into a surprisingly addictive and tensely entertaining game. Remember Master Liang's doctrine and before you know it your virtual dojo will rival the Shaolin Temple.
